Why TimeRetain?

Private: Your time entries stay on your device by default. If you enable sync, an encrypted copy is stored so you can use TimeRetain across devices.

No Account Needed: No sign-up. Start immediately.

Rates & Earnings: Set hourly rates on tags to see earnings per stopwatch, or turn earnings off completely when you only need time tracking.

Encrypted Sync: If you sync, data is encrypted on your device before it leaves. Only your login key can decrypt it — and there is no recovery if you lose it.

Tags: Tag entries by project, client, or topic. Filter to find what you need.

CSV & JSON Export: Download your data anytime.

Make it yours

Use TimeRetain as a focused time tracker, or turn on earnings when rates, totals, and invoice-friendly exports matter.

For contractors

Track billable work with hourly rates, earnings totals, and exports that are ready to support invoicing.

For individuals

Keep it simple with time-only tracking when you want a private record of how your days are spent.

Why TimeRetain exists

Your timesheet knows who you work for, what you charge, and how you spend your days. That makes it deeply personal.

Most time trackers send that information straight to the cloud. For many people, that means trusting a third party with sensitive routines, client work, and earnings data.

TimeRetain takes a different path. It runs locally in the browser, keeps time entries on the device by default, and only syncs encrypted data when sync is enabled.

The result is a time tracker built for control: simple enough for time-only workflows, flexible enough for earnings tracking, and private by default.

Frequently asked questions

What does TimeRetain cost?

TimeRetain is free during beta. Feedback is still being collected and shaping the product. Pricing will be introduced in the future. Your data stays yours — CSV export is always available.

Is TimeRetain really private?

Your time-tracking data stays in your browser by default and is only synced when you enable Sync. If you enable Sync, data is encrypted on your device before syncing. Only your login key can decrypt it.

TimeRetain keeps limited security logs (retained for 30 days) and collects privacy-friendly product analytics (not linked to you as an individual). Full details are in the privacy policy.

Do I need to create an account?

No. If you enable Sync, you receive a login key that only you control. There is no account, e-mail, or password.

Is there anything to install?

No. TimeRetain runs in your web browser on desktop and mobile.

Does TimeRetain work offline?

Yes. Once the app loads for the first time, it works entirely offline. You can verify this by turning off your internet connection and refreshing the page.

Optionally, click 'Install' in your browser to run TimeRetain as a progressive web app (PWA). Chrome or Firefox recommended. Safari supports PWAs but less reliably.

Can I sync between my phone and desktop?

Yes. Enable Sync and enter your login key on another device. Data is encrypted before syncing and cannot be read by anyone else.

Can I export my time tracking data?

Yes. Export all data anytime as CSV or JSON with one click. Use the CSV export for easy invoicing and sharing with clients. Use JSON to back up your data.

Can I turn off earnings?

Yes. Turn off earnings in Preferences. TimeRetain won't show totals or fields for rates and currency.

Does changing the currency affect past data?

No. Changing the currency only affects display, not past data.

What happens to past entries if a tag's hourly rate changes?

Nothing. Past entries keep the rate they were tracked with.

What happens to my data if I clear my browser cache?

Local data will be deleted. Back up your data to prevent loss.

Why do I need to back up my data?

Your device is the primary storage location, even if Sync is enabled. TimeRetain cannot access your data because it is encrypted with your login key.

If you clear your browser storage, lose your login key, or hit a software bug, your data could be permanently lost. To help prevent this, TimeRetain includes a simple backup tool and sends periodic reminders.

What technologies does TimeRetain use?

TimeRetain is built on several web technologies. Special credit goes to Evolu: an open-source, privacy-focused, local-first platform for storing and syncing data securely across devices.

Is TimeRetain open-source?

Not yet. Open-sourcing is not a current priority, though the benefits are clear.

Ready to take back your time?

TimeRetain runs entirely in your browser. No sign-up required.
